Seeing Through Ghosts

Today I rewatched a film I’ve seen two or three times before and enjoy to varying degrees every time, the BBC’s film The Awakening. It’s a film about a woman who, since the death of her love in World War I, spends her time debunking ghost sightings and seances and the like. It’s definitely a premise that has been done before (see: 1408) but I like the period spin on it here. The main character, Florence Cathcart, seems to express a particular desperation in her work. It’s as though her…

A Recurring Horror Story

There’s one thing I forgot to take into account when I came up with this challenge. Today is October 1st. Today is also Saturday. I work on Saturdays. So how am I supposed to watch something today and still have time to post about it at a reasonable hour? (You see, I’ve already failed at that last part, and I haven’t even gotten to my solution.) The solution I’ve come up with, however feeble it may be: I’m going to talk about something I’ve already seen and know well enough…

A Halloween Challenge

Let me open by saying that I freaking love Halloween. It’s by far not only my favorite holiday, but also my favorite day of the year. And with Halloween 1st upon us, I want to try something I’ve tried every October for the past three or four years. In the spirit of the season, I’m going to try and watch a different scary, spooky, creepy movie every day this month. In years past I’ve tried to watch a new scary spooky creepy movie every day – that is, one I…

You Keep Using that Word

It’s come to my attention recently that the new It thing for people to complain about in movies is plot holes. However, in the words of Inigo Montoya, . Culture, society, the collective human psyche – whatever you want to call it, it tends to go through phases. We get these new buzz diagnoses for our problems. ADHD. Gluten free. Plot holes. For most health issues, we see a rise in these diagnoses because we have improved ways of identifying the condition in question, rather than that the condition itself…

Something Something Force Awakens

Now that I’ve posted about Deadpool way later than I wanted to, I might a well backtrack even further and talk about Star Wars. Star Wars is always relevant, right? Busy schedules notwithstanding, the main reason I held off so long on talking about it is that I wasn’t quite sure where to begin. I’m not a huge Star Wars fan, and the series generally isn’t taken seriously as cinema despite largely defining a genre. But come on. It’s Star Wars. I still remember going to the theater to see…

Wade Wilson <3s you

I know, I know, I’ve missed reviewing some major releases recently. We’ll get into the obvious one next week, since it’s slightly less topical at the moment. Right now, though, I want to talk about Deadpool. Now, I might be a film student, but I’m a person just like the rest of you. I put my pants on in the morning one leg at a time–but more importantly, I like a good fun movie as much as the next person. I definitely enjoy those classic “cinephile” movies, and the weird…

Libel! Slander! False advertising!

Forgive the informality, but I’m just musing more than anything else today. Have you ever seen a trailer for a movie that was so bad you wanted those two minutes of your life back? Or, on the flip side, have you ever seen one so amazing that you didn’t want to wait the one to six months for the film to actually be released? I’ve certainly experienced both. What sucks is going to see that movie with the amazing trailer and realizing that you already saw all the parts worth…

Beware of Crimson Peak

I’ve got another contemporary review for you this week. In the spirit of the season, my boyfriend and I saw Crimson Peak on opening night – that is, the Thursday night premier. Maybe sometime I’ll talk about why I think Thursday night premiers are ridiculous, but right now I want to talk about the film. To say that I completely adored every tiny minute detail about Crimson Peak would quite possibly be the greatest understatement in the history of colossal understatements. Where do I even begin with Crimson Peak? I…

Oedipus with what now?

While I was in film school, I had a few underclassmen with whom I liked to hang out. I like to think they enjoyed my company too; they certainly did expend a lot of time and effort to make my thesis as fabulous as possible. Anyway, one day I was talking to the two who would eventually become my producer and my cinematographer. The producer had written a script for his freshman final and was bouncing it off of a couple of friends. Writing is sort of my trade. I…

Marvel Really Can’t Fail

Due to circumstances outside of my control, I am unfortunately a week behind schedule. As such, I suspect most of you have already seen Ant-Man. If not, what on earth are you waiting for? Brief disclaimer: I don’t read comics. I’ve read a few Doctor Strange graphic novels and the original 1964 run of Daredevil, in addition to being disappointed by a few other titles that perhaps About Comics can be coaxed into letting me do a guest post about. But for the most part my expertise is in film.…
